Post-Modernism’s De-Evolution toward Pre-Paganism

“Real science predicts.”

If real science predicts, real divinity prophesies.

Many still refer to the our societal way of thinking and relating as postmodern. The extreme difficulty one has in defining this philosophy gives the reader a clue as to the types of thoughts this philosophy breeds – fluffy ones at best.

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy begins its discussion of postmodern philosophy with,

That postmodernism is indefinable is a truism.”

Word of God Today gives us a slightly more helpful, laymen’s analysis.

While Modernism sees man as a material machine, Postmodernism sees man as simply a cog or node in a social machine.  Rather than being autonomous, man is a product of his culture and only imagines he is self-governing.  While Modernism greatly depended upon ‘reason’ for its progress, Postmodernism now declares that all reason is deeply flawed and affected by bias.  Thus all information, even hallowed scientific information, can no longer be trusted.”

This same article goes on to say,

Unlike the Modernists, the Postmodernists accept religion; any and all religion, except of course, that religion making a claim for universal truth.  Thus we see that both Christianity and Judaism are neatly and quickly excluded from the much talked-about Postmodern ‘toleration.'”

And though we can easily view this definition in our current culture, history has shown us that movements have a slow bleed from one frame of mind to another. Often we cannot accurately name the newest “-ism” until it’s matured enough to look distinct from the previous era. Unfortunately, this “maturation” often progresses like a shining 6th grader turning into a pimply 7th grader – older, but not more attractive.

And so I’d like to make a prediction. Based off of God’s divine foretelling, I believe we’re in the bleed right now, and we’re quickly moving out of postmodernism in America into a new take on an old favorite.

Postmodernism’s De-Evolution

Romans 1 perfectly predicts the true descent of man.

“Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.”

Using the keen eye of divine wisdom, these verses show us not only the historical shift from mono-theism to poly-theism1, but also the imminent transition (and return) to pure Paganism.

Merriam-Webster defines Paganism as,

One who has little or no religion and who delights in sensual pleasures and material goods :  an irreligious or hedonistic person.”

We’re already there!” you say. Not entirely, but as the number of genuine Christians diminishes, and as more and more of even the false world religions are replaced with unadulterated self-worship, we will shortly be a nation (and world) of Pagans.

It is for this reason that I refer to this time in our nation’s philosophical dematuration as Pre-Paganism. Don’t worry, Paganism, we’ll be there soon!

The Consequences of Pre-Paganism

Christians need never fear or give in to cynicism, but we must accept that the outcome of a Pre-Pagan nation is not a pretty one. Romans 1:18-32 lists out the following consequences:

  1. Homosexuality
  2. Unrighteousness
  3. Wickedness
  4. Greed
  5. Evil
  6. Envy
  7. Murder
  8. Strife
  9. Deceit
  10. Malice
  11. Gossip
  12. Slander
  13. Hatred
  14. Insolence
  15. Arrogance
  16. Boasting
  17. Disobedience
  18. Ignorance
  19. Untrustworthiness
  20. Lovelessness
  21. Unmercifulness
  22. Tolerance

After looking at this list, you may wonder how I had the audacity to say we shouldn’t give in to fear or cynicism. Please keep in mind Peter’s words as he describes the Last Days:

“Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, we live in a Pre-Pagan society. Christians must learn how to interact and point to Christ or we may skip right over the Pre-Pagan era right into Paganism.

1Despite “scholarly” evidence to the contrary, the earliest “religions” were in fact mono-theistic. In fact, the very earliest worshipped Yahweh alone. But as man rejected God’s general and special revelation they continued in their downward spiral.
